The Numbers: How Many Shawarmas Can You Buy For a Billion Dollars?

Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Chris Evans as Captain America stand amid rubble on a New York Street

In its third week, The Avengers not only decimated their competition, again, but also reached the elusive goal of raking in a whole billion dollars in revenue in only 19 days. This is, of course, a world record, and it seems like not much will stand between Nick Fury’s Assembly of Dysfunctional Superhumans and at least the third spot on the all-time grosses list. As of now, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 sits there with $1.328 million dollars, but The Avengers will possibly pass that mark before the end of May.

Here are my four box-office lists (courtesy of BoxOfficeMojo and Iceland’s SMAIS), the US, UK, Iceland and Worldwide cume box-office for the May 11-13 weekend, followed by a list of 10 Random Notes:

10 Random Notes on the Box-Office:

1: The Avengers ruled all four lists for the second week in a row, and shows little sign of giving up any of them this weekend. A worldwide weekend of over $100 million is a foregone conclusion.

2: The only film remotely likely to scare up such an amount this weekend is The Dictator, and if early reports from the US are anything to go by, it will probably not reach that much.

2A: Battleship is finally opening in the US, after a 5-week international run. Having bagged $215 million already, the pressure of topping the US chart is probably not as high on director Peter Berg’s mind as it could have been.

7: The plucky little stop-motion film The Pirates! from Aardman Studios is almost at the $100 million dollar mark, and will cross it this week.

5: As I predicted last week, Mel Gibson’s How I Spent My Summer Vacation (or Get the Gringo, as the Yanks reading this know it) hardly made a dent in the UK last weekend. Sliding into 9th place, behind the outrageously camp, over-the-top and redundant Piranha 3DD, can hardly be counted as success.

19: The Hunger Games’ international numbers have still not been released, but it should realistically be on the Worldwide Top 10 somewhere, seeing as it made over $14 million the weekend before.

C: Dark Shadows was not only a disappointment in the US, but also in both the UK and Iceland, where it didn’t come close to equaling The Avengers’ third-week numbers. In the UK it even trailed American Reunion, which opened the week before.

4,35: What to Expect When You’re Expecting is getting hammered by critics and doesn’t seem likely to repeat last year’s Bridesmaids in terms of box-office success, despite a star-studded cast, as it opens this weekend.

π: Lockout finally opened in Iceland, and finished 4th on a disappointing $6,500 dollars, proving that the US is not the only country not ready for camp (but fun) 80s hash-ups. Yet.

10: With The Avengers current gross, you could buy approximately 166.728.607 shawarmas at Rainbow Falafel and Shawarma in downtown New York.

Good to see The Pirates! is doing well. I saw it last month when it was released down here in Australia and thoroughly enjoyed it, as did the kids.
